Hello, My name is Carol Waters and I am the Acting Chair of Governors. I have lived in the area for most of my life. I attended Berry Brow School when it was a Junior and Infant school and I have worked in education for all my working life. I have been a Governor of Berry Brow I&N and Newsome Junior Schools for 8 years and am the Pupil Premium Governor. I enjoy walking, reading and music. The schools are very dear to my heart and I will work for the very best opportunities for the children of these schools
I am Margret Winter. I’ve lived in the area for thirty five years and all my four sons all went to our Newsome schools.
I have been a governor for many years as I see it as a way of contributing to the education of children in our community. I am particularly interested in children’s personal, social, moral and cultural education as I believe it is the foundation of all learning. I am the SEND Governor.
I have worked for Kirklees Education Service since moving here and retired six years ago. I volunteer with two community projects and enjoy reading, gardening sewing and walking in our lovely countryside.
I'm Mark Shotter, a parent governor with two children in the federation. I attended both schools myself and want to see them thrive, both for my own boys and all the children who are lucky to attend! I am a primary teacher myself and have worked in education for 12 years, so I bring both a parent and teacher perspective to our governors' meetings.
Julie is the local vicar and has 3 churches in Newsome, Armitage Bridge and South Crosland. She has lived in Huddersfield since April 2018 but her roots are farther north in Durham.
Before becoming a vicar Julie had an eclectic mix of jobs including building motorways, running a hospital department, working for the Environment Agency and running a pub! During those years she was involved in running youth clubs and after school activities as her children grew up.
As a vicar Julie has worked in a very deprived area of Liverpool before moving to Cambridge; but her northern roots called her back to work in and serve families who don’t always find life easy.
She has sat on governing bodies for many years and believes that being part of the community is vital to her role in the church and making a commitment to serve the families in those communities is essential.
Julie is passionate about giving every child the same opportunities to grow and learn and to show them that they are capable of achieving great things if they put their minds to it! She feels privileged to be a part of Newsome Junior School as it goes from strength to strength!
Dr George Simmers was a secondary school English teacher for thirty-five years.
After his retirement he moved to Yorkshire, and has been a Reading Friend at Newsome Junior School for eight years.
I am Amanda Farron, a parent governor and I also sit on the HR and Finance committee. As a parent of a child within the school, I understand the importance of a good education. In my professional life, I am a qualified accountant and I work for a neighbouring Local Authority in the Education field, within School Finances and have done so for over 14 years. My interests outside of work are spending time with my family, walking and cooking.
Hi I'm Mike and as one of the Finance Governors I help the schools look after their money.
I live in Taylor Hill with Ange and Nathan who recently completed his final year at the Federation.
Monday to Friday I lead a Finance Team working in Manchester City Centre.
I can often be seen walking around the local area and sometimes at the gym in Lockwood, feel free to introduce yourself and have a chat.
My name is Claire McCartney and I am a Co-opted Governor for the Federation. I have been the Early Years Governor for a number of years due to my vast experience as a Nursery Manager and I am also the Safeguarding Governor. I am a parent whose child as attended both Berry Brow Infants and Newsome Juniors so therefore I want the best for both schools in the federation, so that the children get the best possible education and experiences to enable them to achieve in not only their school life but also in their personal lives.
